- Letter of Recommendation
Something extra never harms, is what a Letter of Recommendation is all about! With certain applicants trying to impress the recruiting panel with an amazing cover letter, you can do it differently to secure a competitive edge. An excellent Letter of Recommendation showcases an expert opinion of the person who has closely worked with you and monitored your work. Appreciation bundled up with upsides of hiring you gives a perfect LOR.
LORs are more than just an academic reference. While LORs mention your strengths and weaknesses, these documents offer a valuable third-party opinion about your professional skills and work ethics, making the recruiter ponder over your capabilities. The letter serves as an insight into your character, leadership qualities, and future career potential, showcasing you as one of the employees which are determined to help the foundation scale up the ladder of success.
Few words about a Recommendation letter for job
A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a professional letter that provides an overview of your academic and professional achievements. It also offers third-party validation of your accomplishments and skills. Letters of Recommendations are used across multiple industries to provide insights into your personality, performance, and potential. They can be written by a peer, subordinate, or supervisor. A Letter of Recommendation serves as an endorsement of the applicant’s qualifications for admission to a college, university, graduate school, or business school. They can also be used during the job application process to support the candidate’s candidacy. It is the document that supports your candidature and helps the hiring manager get to know about your professional achievements and potential.
The document mentions your strengths and describes how you’re likely to perform when faced with challenges or stressful situations at work. It outlines how you’re likely to fit into the prospective employer’s culture and team dynamic – whether you’re known for being collaborative or possess excellent leadership qualities
Importance of a LOR
There are many reasons why a recommendation letter is an important component of your application.
- The first and foremost reason is that it makes your application stand out from other applicants. Most of the time, if you have excellent academic qualifications and work experience, a lack of a recommendation letter may compel the employer to ask for one.
- The second reason is that the recommendation letter validates your claims made in the resume or the CV. The references from employers or professors give a third-party perspective of your candidature. A recommendation letter is also a source of information for the employer about your leadership and team abilities. It is not necessary that you can always highlight all these traits in your resume. For example, you may be proud that you were able to lead a team of 40 people successfully but this is not something that can be easily included in the resume due to its length limitations.
- Last but not least, it gives an insight into areas where you need improvement or has certain weak spots. At times, it may include constructive criticism as well which might help you improve yourself at work or in academics.
The true picture: Pros and cons
Besides providing an additional edge, a recommendation letter adds valuable insights into your leadership and team abilities. As someone’s achievements may be subjective and self-serving, a letter from a known person provides validation in the eyes of an admissions or hiring committee.
Like all real-world applications, LORs too come with their own set of pros and cons.
A reference letter gives a third-person opinion of your candidature, which can be valuable in providing insights into your skills and abilities that may not be evident from other documents.
The downside of writing a letter of recommendation is that it is a subjective source. If the recommender has not worked closely with you or does not have an in-depth understanding of your work, they are unable to provide useful insights into your abilities. Also, if the recommender provides only positive feedback about you in the letter, it may be regarded as ‘too good’ to be true.
So, to convert this downside to work appropriately well for you, prior to selecting the ideal person to pen down a letter of recommendation, make sure that they have a basic understanding of the job for which you are applying. The more information they have about the role and the company, the more useful your recommendation letter will be. It’s also helpful if you can speak with the person to whom you are writing.
Format for a Letter of Recommendation
The easiest way to write a reference letter is to start out with an introduction, then move into the body of the letter, and finish with a conclusion and signature. Here’s what to include in each section:
In your introductory paragraph, let the reader know who you are (your job title) and how long you have known this candidate.
In your body paragraph one, discuss specific examples from your experiences with this employee. List some of his key skills or qualities that make him stand out from other candidates. If there are certain points that you think are particularly relevant to the position he is applying for, be sure to mention them here as well. Also, include specific examples about the candidate’s abilities and accomplishments.
In the second body paragraph of your letter of recommendation, share additional comments that support the candidate’s qualifications for the job in question (e.g., “Not only does Anvi excel at her current role as an Assistant Accountant, she often takes on extra responsibilities outside of her job description, such as assisting with inventory management or managing our social media accounts on weekends.”)
In the closing paragraph, reiterate why you think this candidate would be the perfect choice for the job. Include a closing statement saying why you are recommending them and how they would benefit their new employer (e.g., “Anvi is a top-notch employee who will be an asset for the foundation’s future and fulfill all the objectives diligently)
Note: You have to make yourself sound good in order to get hired, but honesty is everything and should be the guiding spirit. A lot of people try to embellish their resumes and recommendation letters with “fluff” words but it’s better just to say what you’ve done and what results it had.
